Recovering from rhinoplasty

2 April 2010 - Filed under Recovering from rhinoplasty

Here is a guide on recovering from rhinoplasty. For those who have not undergo this operation and wanted to know all the information on the recovery period, this will be useful to you. Before I being, I want to let you know that what is described here is not for non surgical rhinoplasty. Non surgical rhinoplasty do not need any long recovery period. Patients typically can return home on the same day the operation is carried out and can resume their daily activities the day after. Contrast this with traditional rhinoplasty and you will see a big difference.

Recovering from rhinoplasty, on average takes about two to three weeks, depending on your body’s recovery period as well as the skills of your surgeon. In the first week, you will need to wear bandage on your nose and you will have some black and blue under your eyes. This is perfectly normal. Most however cannot bear to see this sight and I advice people not to look into the mirror for at least one week after the nose job operation. Not point as it will only upset you. In the first two days, something called gauze packing will also be inserted in your nose to protect the septum from moving and to minimize bleeding.

In terms of pain, there will be discomfort during the initial week after the nose job. While the feeling is discomfort, you will not need any pain killers as there is no real pain. However, if you do need such medication, I am sure your doctor will be more than willing to prescribe some to you.

There will be some swelling during the first 48 hours. Again, this is perfectly normal. However, if you swelling don’t subside after 72 hours, you need to quickly consult your doctor. There might be nothing wrong but it is always good to check to be sure.

Full recovery from rhinplasty is to be expected after two weeks. It is strongly advice that you do not engage in any sports activity during the two weeks and maybe even a month after the bandage comes off. Your nose is very fragile during this period and any minor knocks will send you back to the rhinoplasty clinic for patchwork and even another operation. Hence, it is best not to engage in these types physcial activites at all after the operation.

The fully effects of rhinoplasty will only come after the bandage comes off. However, the final result in refinement of the tip of your nose will take longer, usually about 4-5 months after the operation.

Hope you find this piece of information about recovering from rhinoplasty useful.
